As previously reported, new aviation security requirements are being adopted by the European Commission. The Department for Transport (DfT) has issued a consultation document with a deadline in early  March. On Friday 19th February, representatives from the LAA and the British Gliding Association (BGA) met with DfT officials in London, to discuss problems with the consultation.

The discussions centred on the definition of an ‘airport’. Only aerodromes defined as airports will come under the new security regime, and the term was not defined in the consultation document. This has led to much uncertainty and concern that small aerodromes and gliding sites will be saddled with the need for local risk assessments and extra security measures.

LAA and BGA, working together under the banner of the GA Alliance, had very constructive discussions with the DfT officials, who showed a commitment to good regulation principles and stakeholder engagement. Following the meeting, the DfT are now proposing a revision to the consultation and an extended consultation closing date. It is expected that further details will be announced at a stakeholder meeting at DfT on Friday 26th February.
