Welcome to the LAA webpage dealing with the CAA’s consultation on Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs)
The Issue
The armed forces are in the process of acquiring large UAVs and aspire to fly them outside the restricted airspace where they are currently permitted. They suggest that as the technology matures, commercial and government groups will also want to use UAVs extensively in all UK airspace. A policy on UAV regulation is needed.
The CAA currently takes the view that UAVs must be able to avoid other airspace users in the same manner as a piloted aircraft. It needs a "see and avoid" device and it is said that such a device will be available soon. As this develops there is a risk that we may be required to have some equipment on our aircraft (mode S perhaps), may be excluded from some airspace or be restricted in other ways.
We will monitor these issues and update this page as things develop. If lobbying is required we will advise you through LAA CAN. If you have not yet signed up for LAA CAN please help us by doing so.
