Welcome to the LAA webpage dealing with the proposals to make 8.33KHz channel spacing radios mandatory in some airspace.

Deadline: none yet identified.

The Issue

The introduction of 8.33 KHz channel spacing on VHF radios would mean all light aircraft would have to scrap their existing radios and fit new ones. It is not just a case of being able to select an 8.33 frequency, the bandwidth of the new radios is tighter and old radios would interfere with adjacent 8.33 frequencies.

Today, 8.33 KHz channel spacing has been implemented above FL195. Eurocontrol and the CAA are now studying implementation in en-route airspace at all lower levels as well. Europe Air Sports (EAS) is representing our interest and has obtained an assurance that aerodrome and FIS frequencies will remain on 25 KHz channel spacing.

If 8.33 spacing is implemented in class D and E airspace we would not be able to cross TMAS, CTAs and CTRs which are currently open to us unless we installed new radios. Radar services outside controlled airspace might also be affected. Moreover, once all commercial aviation has changed to 8.33KHz equipment, we can expect Eurocontrol to try to force 8.33KHz on remaining ATC services, making us all install new radios.

We will address these issues through EAS and update this page as things develop. If lobbying is required we will advise you through LAA CAN. If you have not yet signed up for LAA CAN please help us by doing so.

Meanwhile EAS recommends that anyone contemplating buying a new radio should consider an 8.33 capable model.
