• Selection will be based on a formal application and interview by the Board of Trustees at a venue yet to be decided.

Travel and overnight accommodation if required is at the candidate’s own expense.

      • Attendance dates will not normally be changed.

The decision of the Selection Board is final.

The names of those short-listed for interview will be announced on the LAA web site www.laa.uk.com and LA magazine.  Reserves and unsuccessful applicants will be notified separately.

Scholarship winners will be notified by letter in February 2009 and their names will be published in the aviation press.

      NOTES

The NPPL is a new licence intended to be slightly easier to qualify for in terms of content and medical requirements and is limited to flight in UK airspace, although we expect that mutual recognition between European States will happen within a few years.  It must be emphasised that the level of competence required of the licence holder remains the same and that relatively few candidates will reach the standard required in the minimum of 34 hours.

      ACADEMIC STANDARDS

Flying today is inevitably a complex business and requires a reasonable level of education for even private flying while for professional operations or entrance to the RAF it is usual to require at least A levels or Graduate level to gain sponsorship from the airlines or entry to the military.

This should not deter an applicant of modest education who aspires to fly as a hobby.

      MEDICAL STANDARD

The standard for the NPPL is reasonably relaxed and does not preclude a candidate with minor eye problems for example. For a candidate who aspires ultimately to professional or military flying the standard is quite high and anyone embarking on this long and possibly expensive road should consider a JAR Class One medical as a first step to avoid disappointment.

      VERY IMPORTANT NOTE

To ensure fairness, it is a requirement that the initial application contains nothing in addition to the application form.  Anyone attempting to gain advantage by offering unsolicited additional references for example, will be eliminated from the competition.
