Building Metal Airplanes
This book is for anyone who is fabricating metal components, although it has the most benefit for those building a sheet metal or welded tube structure airplane. It covers materials, measuring, basic metal working skills such as drilling, bending, forming, cutting, welding of tube structures and riveting, but also includes instructions on how to use a lathe and a milling machine. There are tables of bolts, rivets and standard aircraft fittings. For those designing an airplane or modifying an existing design, information about material properties and strength of fasteners is listed. It is described how to design and build for better fatigue strength, important things about corrosion protection and bonding metal. Simple repairs of metal structures are described. An airplane builder will have to integrate systems in his airplane, so one chapter is dedicated to present many examples and helpful hints. This book covers how to weld fuel tanks, how to seal integral tanks and how to make fuel or hydraulic lines by cutting, bending and flaring tubes. For those just starting their shop there are many descriptions of tools and equipment needed for working with metal. All airplanes have some metal components, so this book is useful even for those people building wood or composite airplanes. 125 pages, 129 illustrations, by Sonja Englert

New Science of Strong Materials -- JE Gordon
Why isn't wood weaker that it is? Why isn't steel stronger? Why does glass sometimes shatter and sometimes bend like spring? Why do ships break in half? What is a liquid and is treacle one? All these are questions about the nature of materials. All of them are vital to engineers but also fascinating as scientific problems. During the 250 years up to the 1920s and 1930s they had been answered largely by seeing how materials behaved in practice.
But materials continued to do things that they "ought" not to have done. Only in the last 40 years have these questions begun to be answered by a new approach. Material scientists have started to look more deeply into the make-up of materials.
They have found many surprises; above all, perhaps, that how a material behaves depends on how perfectly - or imperfectly - its atoms are arranged. Using both SI and imperial units, Professor Gordon's account of material science is a demonstration of the sometimes curious and entertaining ways in which scientists isolate and solve problems.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR AIRCRAFT HOMEBUILDERS, by Sonja Englert
Aircraft homebuilders are sharing the secrets of their success. Many homebuilders have discovered ways to build a part quicker, for less money or with better quality while working on their project. Many of them are eager to share what they have learned with other builders and help them avoid mistakes. This book is a collection of the experiences of many builders. No matter what type of airplane you are building or what materials it is made from, there are a lot of useful tips on these pages. They cover the range from setting up a shop, tools and jigs to assembling the structure, systems installation, customizations, finishing and flight testing, many of them with step-by-step instructions. With this book, you can benefit from the experiments and years of accumulated knowledge of others. Illustrated with more than 250 pictures, everything is well explained and easy to understand.

Design of Wood Aircraft Structures - ANC 18
Produced for both civil and military use by the US Dept of Defense, this manual is divided into three sections, designed as a whole to give an overview of wood aircraft construction. The first section presents the definitions of standard structural symbols used within the manual, and defines the difference between the strength and elastic properties of plywood elements and plywood panels. The next section looks at the strength and elatic properties of structural elements constructed of wood and plywood. The third section contains methods of structural analysis for the design of various aircraft components, especially taking into account the orthotropic properties of wood. The final section gives recommendations on the structural design of wood aircraft, with examples of how various manufacturers have treated the solution of specific detail design problems. The 234 pages are full of technical data, tables, graphs, charts, diagrams etc.
