Owners and builders always take prime responsibility for the standard and condition of their project or aircraft. When embarking on a 'construction project' it is vital that a builder makes contact with a suitable inspector before work begins. Many inspectors are approved to sign out construction of an aircraft but not to make the final recommendation to the LAA that the aircraft should be cleared for its first flight.
Your inspector will want to visit you, your project and your workshop at the earliest opportunity in order to assess the facilities and the working conditions available - and to have a look at you. In the case of kit aircraft he is going to want to examine the kit to establish its as it should be.
Your inspector will be happy to help with technical queries as they arise, and will usually be your first port of call in times of difficulty. Some LAA Inspectors are busy professionally qualified licensed aircraft engineers and will quite properly charge a commercial rate. Others may be keen experienced builders and in the best LAA tradition be reluctant to accept anything more than expenses. It is up to the individual aircraft owner and inspector involved to make their own commercial arrangements, and the LAA will not get involved in this aspect.
Further useful information regarding the LAA's inspection and airworthiness system is provided in every issue of 'Light Aviation' magazine in a regular full page Engineering Information Panel.
Finding an Inspector
At the top of this page is a tool that enables you to search the list of registered LAA inspectors. This includes contact information for each inspector and the services they provide (by clicking on the inspector's name). We have done our best to ensure all details are as complete and accurate as possible. However, you should be aware that approval details are subject to change from time to time, and some approvals may be discontinued while new inspectors might be appointed.
To find an inspector in your area, simply enter the postcode prefix into the search box (eg. "CO" for Colchester in Essex). If you are unsure which postcode to search under, you can refer to the UK Postcode Map. You will be shown a list of inspectors and clicking on an inspector's name will show the work they are approved to inspect. An explanation of the abbreviated codes has been added and can be reached from the Inspector Services window (reached by clicking on an inspectors name). Please note that you may choose to view all the records, but this may take some time on slower connections. If you find that it is taking a long time to load the page, you can click on your browser's back button to try a proper search instead.
