Devon by Steve Robson

The day was bright and sunny for the
Young Aviators event at Dunkeswell,
which rather set the tone for the whole
day. This year the Strut decided to fly
some children who are patients at the
South West Children’s Hospice, plus their
siblings and families. Once the formalities
were out of the way the flying
programme began, those attending
getting flights in two Jodels, and an
Emeraude, Stinson and Condor. Later in
the day a Cirrus was added to the list.
First of all we flew the ‘little kids’
followed of course by the ‘big kids’ and
just to make sure no one felt left out we
gave everyone a Young Aviators Certificate.
Because the Stinson has four seats it was
possible to take families, including some of
the hospice patients, and this was very warmly
appreciated. By
the end of the
afternoon, we
had lifted 18
youngsters (two
in wheelchairs)
and eight
parents, leaving
everyone with a
smile and a
warm satisfied
afterglow.
Sincere thanks go to all those who helped on the ground and in the air and to the team at Dunkeswell who provided us with an excellent base from which to operate.
