    < Back New Technical Leaflet - Lifed Items 13 Aug 2026 There are usually a number of components on an aircraft where the manufacturer (of the airframe, engine, propeller or other equipment) recommends that they be overhauled/replaced on a regular calendar basis (because they deteriorate through ageing) or a flying hour basis (because they wear out through use), or both. In some cases, these recommendations must be adhered to, for instance where they have been mandated by a Mandatory Permit Directive, or Airworthiness Directive for a type that previously held a Certificate of Airworthiness, or incorporated in an Aircraft Maintenance Programme that has been specified by the LAA. In other cases, these recommendations are not mandatory and the owner has discretion to vary them. As a new development instigated in 2026, to help members and Inspectors to meet their ‘duty of care’ obligations, for safety and, not least, peace of mind, the LAA now advise that: When any component is known to have a recommended limited life, any extension of the life beyond that recommended by the manufacturer is listed down. Against each one, a conscious decision should be made whether or not to continue the part in service or not. In each case, where the decision is to continue the part in service, the justification, mitigation or alternative means of compliance should be recorded. The guidance in this new Technical Leaflet is aimed at helping owners to make and properly record these maintenance decisions, including: How to identify lifed items When a component life is considered mandatory If a life is not mandatory, how to decide an alternative course of action and record the decision not to follow the recommended life The aim is for owners to make considered decisions on such parts, and have a list that can be regularly reviewed by them and their Inspector. To coincide with the launch of this Technical Leaflet and its new advice, LAA have introduced a format for a document ‘ Lifed Item Tracking Supplement Form ’, available to download from the LAA website, that can be used to record the list of lifed items on an aircraft, any deviations that the owner has elected to make from the manufacturer’s recommendations, and the justifications for each case. The LAA Generic Maintenance Schedule LAA/GMS/12/150 has also been updated to include a recommended format that can be used to record the relevant information for aircraft being maintained on customised versions of the GMS. Example entries are given in Appendix 1 of the Technical Leaflet. These documents are linked below. Whichever means of recording is used, this is intended to remain as part of the aircraft’s technical records, along with the logbooks and worksheets etc. and be passed on to a new owner should the aircraft be sold. It’s recommended that the seller bring the list to the buyer’s attention and prevail upon the buyer to review the content and amend as they see fit as part of their transition into taking responsibility for the aircraft’s continued airworthiness. We hope this new Technical Leaflet and associated documents will help discussions between Owners and Inspectors at each Airworthiness Review regarding lifed items.     < Back MTD- 04-2026 Issue 1 - Vans Fuel Pick Up Failure 28 Jul 2026 MTD- 04-2026 Issue 1 - Vans Fuel Pick Up Failure Following consultation on the draft Mandatory Technical Directive (MTD), we have published the final MTD-04-2026 Issue 1, effective 28 July 2026. This MTD relates to confirming which aircraft have embodied Van’s SB 06-2-23, requiring wire locking of the fuel pick-up assemblies in the wing fuel tanks, or have the later T-715 anti-rotation brackets fitted. It follows a recent incident involving a Van’s RV-6 suffering a fuel starvation event in flight, due to a fuel pick-up tube becoming detached after the retaining nut had come undone. Upon inspection, it was found that the wire locking had not been incorporated and the airframe logbook did not show an entry confirming compliance with SB 06-2-23. Owners are required to review their aircraft records and, where compliance with SB 06-2-23 cannot be confirmed, nor the fitment of T-715 anti-rotation brackets, Owners must complete the inspections and actions specified in the MTD within the next 25 flying hours or at the next Permit to Fly revalidation, whichever occurs first. Compliance with this MTD must be recorded in the aircraft airframe logbook. If applicable, the entry must also state compliance with Van’s SB 06-2-23 or the fitment of T-715 anti-rotation brackets. Otherwise, there must be a logbook entry, signed by the Owner, explaining why SB 06-2-23 has not been embodied, or T-715 anti-rotation brackets fitted.     < Back LAA Alert published for Gen 4’ Jabiru 2200 and 3300 engines 1 Mar 2025 LAA Alert A-03-2025 has been published on the LAA website (and is also attached), highlighting the recent service bulletin, JSP 051, published by Jabiru Aircraft Pty Ltd, which applies to specific Jabiru 2200 and 3300 engines and requires the replacement of the pistons on engines within certain serial number ranges, which they state were supplied between April 2017 and August 2019. Jabiru regards the Bulletin as mandatory. The Bulletin advises that Jabiru has identified that pistons supplied with the affected engines were in some cases susceptible to failure, and have specified that the pistons must be replaced by pistons of the later, improved design at or before 200 hours running time, following the procedures shown in the engine overhaul book, including any necessary running-in provisions and choice of oils.     < Back Mandatory Technical Directive issued for many Zenair types 14 Jan 2025 MTD-01-2025 - 'Inspection of horizontal stabiliser (tailplane) attachment brackets and associated hardware for cracks, looseness and other forms of distress' is issued for Zenair CH601, CH650, CH701, CH750 and variants of these four models. This MTD can be found HERE and is also available below. A number of cases have been found whereby the structural integrity of the horizontal stabiliser mountings on the Zenair types identified above have been compromised by one or more of the following: cracking of the attachment brackets oversize holes loose rivets distorted and chafed brackets. These problems could occur due to a number of factors including poor build quality, a build-up of tolerances in the positioning or dimensions of the brackets, improper assembly, rough treatment or in-flight vibration. Failure of a tailplane attachment could result in degraded controllability in flight or loss of control. Special inspections of this area have been recommended by Zenair since January 2017, in their document ‘Mandatory Action. Jan. 2017 – Inspection of Horizontal Stabilizer tail attachment brackets’.     < Back MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 - Pietenpol Air Camper Wing Rear Strut Internal Corrosion 24 Jul 2026 MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 – Pietenpol Air Camper Wing Rear Strut Internal Corrosion Issue 1 of this MTD, issued in 2024, required inspection of the rear 'Jim Wills' type struts for corrosion, replacement of any corroded struts, and the drilling of a single drain hole in the end cap of each strut. MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 supersedes Issue 1 and introduces revised drain hole requirements based on feedback from the field. Aircraft fitted with Jim Wills rear wing struts must have the struts inspected for internal and external corrosion. For aircraft that have not previously complied with Issue 1, the requirements of Issue 2 must be completed before next flight. For aircraft that have already complied with Issue 1, the additional requirements introduced in Issue 2 must be completed by 31st December 2027.
