< Back MTD-01-2025 ISSUE 2 published - Zenair Tailplane Brackets 28 Aug 2025 MTD-01-2025 - 'Inspection of horizontal stabiliser (tailplane) attachment brackets and associated hardware for cracks, looseness and other forms of distress' for Zenair CH601, CH650, CH701, CH750 and variants of these four models has been upissued to Issue 2. This is in order to correct an error in the 'Effective Date' of this MTD. This MTD can be found HERE and is also available below. A number of cases have been found whereby the structural integrity of the horizontal stabiliser mountings on the Zenair types identified above have been compromised by one or more of the following: cracking of the attachment brackets oversize holes loose rivets distorted and chafed brackets. These problems could occur due to a number of factors including poor build quality, a build-up of tolerances in the positioning or dimensions of the brackets, improper assembly, rough treatment or in-flight vibration. Failure of a tailplane attachment could result in degraded controllability in flight or loss of control. Special inspections of this area have been recommended by Zenair since January 2017, in their document ‘Mandatory Action. Jan. 2017 – Inspection of Horizontal Stabilizer tail attachment brackets’. < Back Alert A-04-2025 - Jabiru Flywheel Bolts 12 Jun 2025 LAA Alert A-04-2025 - Jabiru Flywheel Bolts LAA Alert A-04-2025 has been published on the LAA website (and is also attached), highlighting the Installation Procedure, Torque Checks and Replacement Interval for Flywheel Attachment Bolts on aircraft equipped with Jabiru 2200, 3300 and 5100 engines, and withdrawal of LAA Alert AWA/20/15. With the advice in JSB-012 (Issue 9 onward) having been promulgated by Jabiru, LAA has withdrawn Alert AWA/20/15, which means that provided the advice in JSB-012 Issue 9 or subsequent is followed, along with regular bolt torque checks at every 100 hours and annual check as called for in the Engine Maintenance Manual, the recommended bolt life is as stated in the Engine Maintenance Manual (currently 500 hrs). For LAA aircraft having the flywheel bolts replaced, or torque checked, the work must be overseen and signed-for by a suitably approved LAA Inspector. Engine logbook entries must be made and certified with a PMR statement referencing JSB-012 in the logbook white pages, as well as an entry in the logbook pink pages (or equivalent method for tracking continued airworthiness compliance). Phil previously worked as a commercial pilot, before moving into aircraft maintenance. Phil has been an LAA aircraft owner for many years – including a Taylor Monoplane, Pitts Special and a Miles Gemini. < Back New LAA Inspectors - Umberto Izzo & Simon Boynett 26 Jan 2024 It is time to introduce you to two more new LAA Inspectors - Umberto Izzo and Simon Boynett, who both attended an LAA Inspector Assessment Day in December, with our Chief Inspector, Lucy. Umberto's experience is mainly in general aviation and microlight aircraft (metal, fabric and composites), either Lycoming, Continental or Rotax-powered. He is also IRMT-approved. He owns a share in Jodel 1050. Simon is a retired Licensed Aircraft Engineer with 44 years of experience working on Commercial Passenger and Cargo aircraft. He has a B1 and B2 CAA licence (Airframes, Engines and Electrical generation systems) B2 (Avionics, Auto flight, Auto land systems, Radio and Radar). In addition to this, he has an FAA issued A & P licence. He put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into building his own Vans RV 7, that he still loves to fly today as often as he can. Although retired, he still has aeroplanes and safety in his blood and looks forward to helping others to keep the high standards the LAA require, and to advise and certify Maintenance and Permit to Fly revalidation inspections. An Introduction to Aircraft Flying Qualities Price £500 for members, £550 for non-members Duration 09h00 to 17h00 both days < Back About the Course All aircraft need good flying qualities to enable safe flight. Flying qualities – the response of an aircraft to the pilots control inputs - are influenced by key design characteristics of the aircraft including the wings, fuselage, empennage, mass and balance, control systems, propulsion systems, or high lift devices and landing gear where fitted. This course describes how the design (and construction) of a fixed wing light aircraft may positively or negatively impact flying qualities. The course begins with a description of the underlying theory of stability & control, design guidelines and relevant certification standards for a light aircraft. Examples and accident case studies are used to support the theory. Test methods used to assess flying qualities are described and practical ‘hands on ‘ exercises are performed using a fully immersive Virtual Reality + Motion simulator to experience the effects of design changes on flying qualities. This ‘hands-on’ course is conducted over two full days with day one covering longitudinal stability and stalls with day two covering lateral/directional stability and spins. The course finishes with a summary of the theory and exercises conducted plus recommended references for further study. Course tutor is Dr Mike Bromfield. Mike is an Aerospace Systems & Human Factors Engineer with Myriad Business Ltd. He is also an Associate Professor (Honorary) in Aerospace and Flight Safety Researcher at the University of Birmingham and a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Ergonomics/Human Factors Specialist. < Back LAA Alert for Rotax 900 series engines regarding the oil spray nozzle 18 Dec 2024 Inspection and/or Replacement of Oil Spray Nozzle On 16.12.24, Rotax issued a new MANDATORY Service Bulletin SB 912 i-016/SB 915 i-016 / SB 916 i-006 which calls for urgent action for engines of specified models within certain serial number ranges, if the engine has run for less than 200 hours from new, or engines which have been fitted with specific overhaul kits supplied between 01.01.22 and 31.10.24 inclusive. The bulletin concerns problems with a possible full or partial blockage of the oil spray nozzle due to an excessive application of Loctite at the manufacturing stage, when assembling the sprag clutch housing. This can lead to inadequate cooling of the stator assembly, potentially causing loss of electrical power to the engine’s ECU.
