He has experience in VW engines, having rebuilt several. In his 30 years of LAA membership, he has owned over 20 LAA types, giving him a broad exposure to the maintenance of different aircraft. < Back Advanced LAA Rally Camping Permits - Now closed. Camping permits can be bought onsite. Camping passes, which cover the duration of your stay, are available to purchase on arrival at a cost of £65. Camping facilities, providing basic amenities, including hot showers will be available on site. There is ample ground for caravans and mobile homes. The campsite will be open from midday Thursday 28th August and close on Monday morning 1st September. Please note entry to the Rally Exhibition Site is charged separately. Prices are for the duration of your stay. On site catering and bar will be available in the Exhibition area during event opening hours and evening food, bar and entertainment will be provided by Leicestershire Aero Club in the evenings. Issue 2 of this Mandatory Technical Directive was developed through consultation with all Inspectors and Europa Owners, so thank you to all those who contributed to the consultation process. This directive applies to all Europa aircraft. Owners are required to identify the tailplane torque tube configuration, determine whether clamps are fitted (and which version), and carry out the applicable inspection and any required corrective actions. Where required, initial compliance must be completed within 5 flying hours from the effective date of the MTD. < Back MTD-02-2026 Issue 1 Published - Cracking in E-Props Durandal HexMc® Propeller Hubs 26 Jun 2026 MTD-02-2026 - Cracking in E-Props Durandal HexMc® Propeller Hubs This MTD is applicable to all aircraft operating under an LAA Permit to Fly fitted with an E-Props Durandal 3-blade propeller hub. A safety concern has been identified with certain HexMc® hubs where cracks may develop near the blade bolt areas, likely linked to over-tightening and possible manufacturing issues in specific production batches. Any HexMc® hub found to be cracked must be replaced with a serviceable, uncracked hub or the propeller replaced with an alternative propeller approved for that aircraft. Replacement hubs may be available from E-Props. Owners of cracked hubs are advised to contact E-Props directly before purchasing replacements. Within 10 flying hours or by the next Airworthiness Review, whichever is sooner, it must be determined whether the propeller hub is of an affected type and an initial inspection carried out by an LAA Inspector. If affected, ongoing inspections are required annually or every 50 flight hours. Stuart spent considerable time as an aircraft panel beater fitter and has a love for all things aviation. Stuart is a multiple aircraft builder, painter and maintainer. He is open to requests for information, advice and permit inspections. Stuart is currently the Manager at a sheet metal specialists workshop. < Back LAA members - Make your views known! 25 Jan 2024 Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council's consultation on their draft Local Plan – which includes a proposed new Popham Garden Village on Popham Airfield, has opened. It runs until 4 March 2024. This proposal is not in line with either Government policy or their stated aim to make the UK the best place in the world for General Aviation. The Government's policy can be found in their publication ' Flightpath to the Future " and makes repeated references to the vital importance of airfields, forming a critical part of national infrastructure. You can have your say and tell Basingstoke & Deane Council that their proposal is contrary to Government policy and insist the proposal is removed from the current ‘draft’ strategic plan. Finish 17:00. < Back About the Course The Basics course covers simple DC theory and concentrates on the practical aspects of installing a basic permit aircraft electrical system. The course explains how to interpret a ‘typical’ permit aircraft electrical systems diagram and for every element, explains how to size, select and source components and then how to practically install them. This Advanced course builds on the Basics course by providing more detail about component selection and options and the use of integrated power management systems within permit aircraft. The course takes the simple systems design introduced in the Basics course and explores options for creating more complex electrical systems including the use of dual and essential system bus bars. The course introduces fault tolerant design considerations, thus allowing attendees to consider safety and fault analysis in their own designs. As a tool for understanding this aspect of the course, it will take an introductory look into the requirements of electrical systems for those wishing to fly their aircraft under IFR. What this course will try to do is: Explain power generation and distribution options in a light aircraft More advanced consisderations into component selection Discuss circuit protection devices and systems Explain failure modes and reliability issues Introduce interference and EMC issues Show correct grounding and screening techniques Provide you with the knowledge to plan an installation and create the necessary documentation Warn about the ‘gotcha’ areas and the things to look out for What the course will not do is: Turn you overnight into an expert Enable you to fault find on an undocumented aircraft installation Delve inside avionics boxes It will be useful, but not essential, for people to have previously attended the Basic course. Inspector Training Seminars In 2018, the ‘Inspector Training Seminar’ (ITS) scheme was introduced. This means that, in order to continue operating as an Inspector, every Inspector must attend an ITS in the previous four years, as assessed on 31st March each year, as part of their recurrent training. All Inspector Training Seminars for spring 2025 have now been completed, there will be more Seminars planned for Autumn and Winter. Each Inspector Training Seminar is free-of-charge and includes a complimentary lunch. The day runs from 0930 to 1630. Any Inspector is welcome to book onto a seminar, effectively resetting their ITS attendance and therefore, recurrent training, early; but priority will be given to those Inspectors due for review by 31st March 2026.
