< Back New Technical Leaflet – Parts Produced by Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) 2 Jul 2026 Technical Leaflet 3.30 – Parts Produced by Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) This new Technical Leaflet provides guidance on the use of additively manufactured (3D-printed) parts in LAA aircraft. It draws on lessons identified during an AAIB investigation and highlights the importance of selecting appropriate materials and manufacturing processes, particularly for airworthiness-critical and environmentally demanding applications. The leaflet explains why the properties of 3D-printed components cannot be assumed from material names alone and outlines the key characteristics that should be considered when assessing the suitability of printed parts, including material composition, manufacturing process, key process parameters, and build orientation. It also reminds builders to declare significant modifications involving 3D-printed parts to LAA Engineering for technical assessment. Please take the time to read the TL3.30 HERE (or below) and refer to it when considering the use of 3D-printed parts in aircraft construction or modification. - Pilot Coaching | Light Aircraft Assoc
Pilot Coaching Scheme LAA DTO The LAA is a CAA Declared Training Organisation (DTO). Our enjoyment of flying, and the ability to share that with others, carries with it a responsibility to maintain good standards of flying and airmanship. The Pilot Coaching Scheme (PCS) provides coaches to assist with specific courses and any general training need. COACHES The LAA has the Pilot Coaching Scheme - all Coaches are current CAA and Part 21-FCL certified Class Rating Instructors, Flight Instructors, or Flight Examiners. They’re also your trainer, confidante and mentor throughout the process of you learning to fly your aircraft. FIND A COACH Click on the button below to go to a map of all the LAA Coaches. You can find out their location, contact details, photograph and a short profile about them. Most coaches are happy to travel reasonable distances to accommodate your needs. WHY HAVE THE PCS? Statistics show that for LAA aircraft, the transition of a pilot onto a new aircraft type is a frequent source of accidents, more so than the aircraft's initial test flying phase. The same is true of the first flight of any unfamiliar aircraft, whether it is a home-built, vintage, or microlight. HOW IT WORKS Most LAA coaches have completed all differences themselves applicable to LAA types, so they can provide your differences or familiarisation training - though naturally, before doing so, they may need the opportunity to fly the aircraft sufficiently to acquaint themselves with the individual model concerned. WHAT DOES THE PCS OFFER? The PCS offers Licence Revalidation & Renewals, Differences Training, Familiarisation Training, Type Conversions, Licence Migrations and much more! Click the button below to find out what each of these means in detail. - Inspector Renewal | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back Inspector Renewal 19 Mar 2024 It's that time of year again! LAA Inspector Authorisations lapse at the end of this month. Renewing is simple, available both on and offline. In order to renew this year, Inspectors need to carry out two simple steps, which are as follows: Complete and sign the ' Inspector Declaration, ' which was emailed to all Inspectors on 4th March, and return to LAA Engineering, either as a scanned document or in the post. Pay the Inspector Renewal Fee , which is £40 and covers administration of an Inspector Authorisation throughout the year. (For Inspectors of Factory Built Gyroplanes, there is no longer an additional fee. All Inspectors pay £40). Inspectors can pay via the LAA shop, found here , or by giving us a call with their payment card details. Alternatively, Inspectors can pay by Bank Transfer. Inspectors' continuing support is crucial and we sincerely hope that all Inspectors will renew. Next Previous

- LAA Alert A-02-2026 - MCR-01 Tailplane Mounting Corrosion | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back LAA Alert A-02-2026 - MCR-01 Tailplane Mounting Corrosion 23 Jul 2026 Alert A-02-2026 - MCR-01 Corrosion of Aluminium Alloy Wing and Tailplane Attachment Brackets This Alert has been issued following the discovery of significant corrosion affecting the tailplane attachment brackets on an MCR-01 aircraft. Owners should mitigate the risk by rigorous inspections and taking suitable preventative measures. In addition to the existing requirement for periodic wing removal and inspection, we strongly recommend that the tailplane is also removed at the similar intervals for clearer view of the attachments. Owners of MCR-01 aircraft are strongly advised to include this advice in their aircraft’s maintenance schedules. Please refer to the Alert A-02-2026 HERE or below for full details and recommended checks. A-02-2026 - MCR-01 Tailplane Mounting Corrosion .pdf Download PDF • 319KB Next Previous
- MTD-06-2025 published - Europa Tailplane Torque Tube Mod Failure | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back MTD-06-2025 published - Europa Tailplane Torque Tube Mod Failure 16 Dec 2025 Ref: LAA Mandatory Technical Directive MTD-06-2025 – Europa Tailplane Torque Tube Clamp Mod A recent inspection of a Europa fitted with the tailplane torque tube clamp modification, LAA MOD 10623, revealed both halves of the clamp had broken and fallen apart. These clamps are intended to prevent relative movement between the tailplane torque tube, the tailplane drive plates and the central drive horn, on which the mass balance arm is mounted. Failure of these clamps could allow free play to develop, potentially leading to taper pin hole damage, tailplane flutter, or jamming of the pitch control mechanism. An inspection must be carried out within the next 5 flying hours to determine whether MOD 10623 is fitted. If MOD 10623 clamps are fitted, making use of a light source and mirror as necessary, inspect the alloy clamp blocks for any signs of cracking (in particular along the sharp corner between the bolt flanges and main body), for any signs of looseness or relative movement between the parts and for any other abnormalities. If any of these are detected, the aircraft must not be flown and LAA Engineering must be contacted. This must be repeated at intervals not exceeding 25 flight-hours or the next Permit revalidation inspection, whichever occurs first, for as long as MOD 10623 remains fitted. Please refer to the below Mandatory Technical Directive for full details, compliance times, and certification requirements. This MTD can be found HERE and is also available below.
