< Back LAA 'Grass Roots Fly-In' returns 23 Apr 2023 The LAA is returning to the green grass of Popham Aerodrome in Hampshire for a repeat of its “Grass Roots Fly In” from 18th to 20th August 2023. The Fly-In will again on one hand take the Associate back to its traditional roots, while continuing to offer the first chance to see some of the latest aircraft and products in the recreational aviation market. What was particularly notable about the 2022 Popham event was its sociality. LAA members and exhibitors alike commented on its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with post-event comments such as “It’s a great reunion as well as a fly-in–cum trade show” and “super friendly, the event always had a good vibe”. A joint venture with Popham Aerodrome, the LAA Grass Roots Fly In will develop its strengths as a social event bringing flyers from around the UK and Europe to meet fellow enthusiasts. The grass runways at Popham and the airfield’s famed rural ambience will mean that the event will focus on the fly-in and social element as much as on a large exhibition campus. The earlier mid-August date will also mean longer evenings, allowing more scope for flyers from further afield and hopefully, milder conditions for those who choose to ‘camp under the wing’. Said LAA CEO designate Simon Tilling: “The LAA Grass Roots Fly In was a great success last year, with over 3,000 visitors, more than 30 exhibitors and a total of 350 visiting aircraft through the weekend. It is a different event to the past, larger scale LAA Rallies and we’re working on plans for the continuation of a larger scale LAA event in the future. < Back New LAA Inspector - Ian Pattingale 6 Feb 2024 It is time to introduce you to the final new LAA Inspector from the recent batch of LAA Inspector Assessment Days - Ian Pattingale. Ian spent 9 years in the RAF as a propulsion technician, after a brief spell as a Development Engineer. He then spent the following 30 years at British Airways in various roles from aircraft Technical Instructor to B737 Flight Test Engineer. His current job is as an Engineer in London Heathrow Engineering Operations, where we are responsible for providing serviceable aircraft to support the flying programme. He's a keen glider pilot with a current 'Full Cat' instructor rating, as well as a 'Senior Inspector/Chief Engineer (ARC Signatory)' on wood, composite and metal airframes for gliders. In addition, he's a B1 Licensed, with current B777 ratings . As a member of the Vintage Gliding Club, Ian is keen to promote the continuing airworthiness of 'vintage' glider types - a current project that I am working on is the restoration of a 1976 Schleicher ASK18 to a fully airworthy flying condition. Armstrong/Isaacs Bursary Winners of 2025 Bursaries!! Five bursaries of up to £1,500 are offered every year to support young pilots already in PPL training. To qualify for these bursaries you must be under 30, are required to already have reached ‘first solo’ standard, have completed a minimum of five hours solo training and have gained the necessary medical and ground qualifications to continue your training. Bursary applications will be open towards the end of October for awarding in 2026. AppYo Simon Grainger (above - left) Flying has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. The sense of freedom and the challenge of mastering flight are aspects that keep me motivated. In the future, I plan to become a flight instructor, sharing my passion with others while continuing to grow as a pilot. I see instructing not only as a way to give back but as a powerful opportunity to inspire and support the next generation of aviators. Being awarded the Armstrong Isaacs Bursary is a significant step in my journey and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity. This support will allow me to continue my training with renewed focus and momentum, bringing me closer to achieving my goal of completing my PPL and becoming a fully qualified pilot. I would like to thank the LAA and its members for this opportunity, which I hope to repay in the future through continued involvement in the aviation community. Without it, there is no doubt I would be a number of months away from completion, but with it I hope to be a PPL holder within a short number of weeks. Armstrong/Isaacs bursaries are funded from the Armstrong/Isaacs Fund, which is based on a major donation from David Armstrong, who was a founder member of the original ULAA in 1947, a lifelong member of the LAA’s predecessor the PFA and the latter’s chairman from 1960 to 1964. His legacy, co-named with that of aircraft designer and builder John Isaacs, has, since 1998 enabled many young prospective pilots to gain their PPL. The Annual General Meeting of the Light Aircraft Association Ltd Old Warden Aerodrome Airfield of The Shuttleworth Collection Bedfordshire 20th October 2024 N otice is given that the AGM of the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) will be held in the Discovery Hub, Old Warden Aerodrome, Biggleswade, SG18 9EP at 12Hrs on Sunday 20th October 2024. Nominations for Board Directors and Notices of Motions of any kind for the AGM must be received at LAA HQ, no later than Sunday 8th September 2024. Nominations must be signed by both proposer and seconder, both of whom must be beneficial shareholders. In respect of nominations to the Board of Directors, candidates must have been a beneficial shareholder continuously for at least two years and include a signed statement indicating their willingness to serve as a Director, should they be elected. The AGM will provide for both in person and remote on-line participation. These arrangements will be professionally administered. In addition, those unable to attend may elect to submit proxy votes. A full list of nominations, Motions together with the proxy voting form will be published with October’s Light Aviation and on-line via the LAA website. The AGM will be pre-ceded by the presentation of LAA Service, Rally Trophies and Awards to members. Following the AGM there will be time reserved for a Member’s Forum for discussion and Q&A on general matters with the Board and CEO. Light refreshments will be available upon arrival and lunch will be available to purchase in the Shuttleworth cafe. Provision will also be made for members to fly-in and visit the Shuttleworth museum and gardens – full details of which will be published in due course.
