    < Back Alert A-03-2026 - Loose Propeller Bolts - Effect of Prolonged Heatwaves on Wooden Propellers 30 Jul 2026 Alert A-03-2026 - Loose Propeller Bolts - Effect of Prolonged Heatwaves on Wooden Propellers This Alert has been issued to raise awareness of the potential for a serious safety issue following several recent reports of propeller retaining bolts becoming loose on aircraft fitted with one-piece wooden propellers. In some cases, propellers have been damaged and, most seriously, accidents have either occurred or been narrowly averted. Because of the recent bout of extreme heatwaves, owners of aircraft operating under an LAA Permit to Fly with a one-piece wooden propeller are strongly recommended to check that their propeller retaining bolts are correctly torqued as a matter of urgency, whether or not the aircraft is due a scheduled check.     < Back LAA System Update - 9 Oct 9 Oct 2024 9th October 2024 We are now up and running! Many apologies, once again, for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience. You may notice a few changes which are aimed to make the system more user friendly. Regards LAA Team 8 Oct 12:30 Due to an unexpected problem, our system is still in maintenance mode whilst they work on it. We apologies for the inconvenience this is causing and as soon as we are back on line, we will send an email out to members to advise them the site is live. 7 Oct - 15:35 Unfortunately it’s taking a lot longer than expected to update our systems and we are still in maintenance mode. Hopefully we should be ready to go live later on this afternoon. 4 Oct We will be upgrading our software which runs our membership and engineering databases on Monday 7th October. This will mean that our system will be put into maintenance mode at about 7.30 am and should come online again around midday.     < Back MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 - Pietenpol Air Camper Wing Rear Strut Internal Corrosion 24 Jul 2026 MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 – Pietenpol Air Camper Wing Rear Strut Internal Corrosion Issue 1 of this MTD, issued in 2024, required inspection of the rear 'Jim Wills' type struts for corrosion, replacement of any corroded struts, and the drilling of a single drain hole in the end cap of each strut. MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 supersedes Issue 1 and introduces revised drain hole requirements based on feedback from the field. Aircraft fitted with Jim Wills rear wing struts must have the struts inspected for internal and external corrosion. For aircraft that have not previously complied with Issue 1, the requirements of Issue 2 must be completed before next flight. For aircraft that have already complied with Issue 1, the additional requirements introduced in Issue 2 must be completed by 31st December 2027.   • Flying into Leicester | Light Aircraft Assoc

    Flying into Leicester Airport If you intend to fly into the LAA Rally at Leicester, you will need to book an arrival slot. These are available via Eventbrite. Should you wish to fly-in on more than one day a separate slot will be required for each landing. Arrival and Departure Procedures The Pilot Notes for the LAA Rally at Leicester Fri 4th September - Sun 6th September are now available! Slot bookings can be booked and purchased via the Eventbrite website. Please ensur e that you are familiar with the procedures before flight. Please also note the RAT in force for the Victory airshow at Cosby approximately 7.5m SW of Leicester airfield and plan your approach to and departure from the Rally accordingly. For any pilot booked-in for the Thursday normal aerodrome procedures apply. Leicester will have copy of your slot booking. One landing fee of £10.00 (+ booking fee) covers a single landing and aircraft parking of up to three days and camping by your aircraft. Pilots and accompanying passengers will also need to purchase individual entry tickets via the LAA Shop to gain access to the Rally and exhibition site.

    < Back Mandatory Technical Directive issued for Jabiru 2200 engines 10 Jul 2024 Mandatory Technical Directive, MTD-05-2024 has been issued today to introduce mandatory checks on the clearance between the distributor cap and rotor arm in Jabiru 2200 engines where the cap or rotor have recently been changed (or following subsequent changes). This follows an in-service finding where differences in distributor cap design were found which lead to extreme wear in the components causing the engine to stop. The MTD must be carried out before further running of the engine on or after 10th July 2024 on Jabiru 2200 engines where the distributor cap and/or rotor arm has been changed in the last 20 engine hours, or are subsequently changed. The checks are also recommended on all other Jabiru 2200 engines. Next Previous

  • New LAA Inspector - Neil Oakman | Light Aircraft Assoc

    < Back New LAA Inspector - Neil Oakman 22 Sept 2025 We are pleased to welcome Neil Oakman as a new LAA Inspector, having attended an LAA Inspector Assessment Day at Turweston recently. Neil’s interest in aviation began during his early years living near the former RAF Sawbridgeworth airfield. Each summer, he would cycle to the edge of the old perimeter track to watch Piper Pawnee crop-spraying aircraft take off and land, sparking a lifelong enthusiasm for flight. After leaving school, Neil studied engineering and began working at local airfields, gaining hands-on experience with a variety of vintage aircraft ranging from Piper Cubs to the Sea Hurricane. This provided a strong foundation in both traditional aircraft construction and maintenance practices. He later pursued a career as a commercial pilot. Further details of his flying background can be found on his coaching profile on the LAA website. Throughout his aviation career, Neil has maintained his own aircraft as well as those of colleagues. This has given him a broad practical knowledge of types such as the De Havilland Chipmunk and the Scottish Aviation Bulldog, along with experience in maintaining aircraft constructed from metal, wood, and fabric. While his exposure to carbon and composite structures is limited at present, he is keen to expand his skills in this area as it represents a growing sector within the sport aviation community. As an LAA Inspector, Neil is committed to supporting aircraft owners by providing practical advice and guidance to help ensure their aircraft are operated and maintained to the high standards of safety, airworthiness, and reliability required by the LAA.     < Back MTD-05-2025 Eurofox Rudder Pedal Cracking 19 Nov 2025 MTD-05-2025 Eurofox Rudder Pedal Cracking - Mandatory Inspection requirements, which must be completed before your next flight There have been two reported instances in the UK of Eurofox aircraft experiencing cracking at the right-foot rudder pedal on the starboard seat side, where it is welded to the rudder pedal torque tube, leading to the pedal no longer being rigidly attached to the torque tube. On at least one of these instances, aircraft handling was negatively affected, reducing yaw authority and seriously degrading flight safety. Note that failure of the starboard side right-foot rudder pedal results in loss of rudder control, even when the aircraft is flown from the Pilot in Command position i.e. from the port seat side. Please refer to the MTD-05-2025 document below for full details of the mandatory inspection requirements, which must be completed before your next flight and subsequently at intervals not exceeding 10 flight-hours or the next Permit Revalidation inspection, whichever occurs first. In response to the rapidly evolving landscape of aviation technology and the increasing need for enhanced safety measures, the GAA has undertaken a thorough review and revision of its Electronic Conspicuity policy. This updated position paper reflects the Alliance's commitment to fostering innovation, ensuring airspace safety, and promoting a collaborative approach for all UK aviation. Key highlights of the updated Electronic Conspicuity Position Paper include: 1. Technology Integration : The GAA supports the widespread adoption and integration of electronic conspicuity technologies across all general aviation aircraft.
