< Back Alert A-11-2025 - Eurostar aileron rose joint and rudder hinge inspection 8 Oct 2025 LAA Engineering has issued Alert A-11-2025 to highlight the recent issue of an Airmasters service bulletin that requires checks on the integrity of a rose joint in the aileron controls and the rudder hinge, following examples of these joints migrating and jamming aileron controls. Following the up-issue of Airmasters SB/EUR/023 to issue 3, on 07/10/25 CAA has issued MPD 2025-004-E to mandate the checks contained in the SB, which supersedes MPD 2025-003-E initially issued on the subject. < Back New LAA Inspector - Clive Sutton 28 Mar 2024 The LAA is pleased to welcome Clive Sutton as a new LAA Inspector. Clive came to an Assessment Day at LAA HQ at the start of March. Clive is ex-RAF, a Chartered Engineer and a BMAA Inspector. He prefers composite & metal airframes and Rotax 4-stroke engines (especially the Europa type). He has little experience with 2-strokes of Continentals/Lycomings or wood and fabric aircraft. < Back Eurofox Rudder Pedal Failures - LAA Standard Modification Approved & MTD-05-2025 Issue 4 19 Jan 2026 LAA Standard Modification SM16826 provides a terminating action to the 10-hour inspections required in LAA MTD-05-2025, which has now been up-issued to ISSUE 4 The LAA Standard Modification – SM16826 ‘ Reinforcement of Rudder Pedal to Torque Tube Joints ’ has been through our internal review process and is now formally approved. SM16826 strengthens all 4 pedal joints by the addition of welded steel, wrap-around finger plates. Incorporating this standard modification provides a terminating action to the 10-hour inspections required in LAA MTD-05-2025, which has now been up-issued to Issue 4. The CAA have also confirmed that incorporating this modification will be a terminating action for CAA MPD-2026-002-E and we expect the MPD to be upissued this week to reflect this. Once Standard Modification SM16826 is completed, owners will need to submit an LAA/MOD 1 Form ( Standard Mod Incorporation ) to let us know that the modification has been embodied, so that we can update our records at LAA HQ. A copy of Form LAA/MOD 1 is here . As a CAA-approved welder is required for this modification, owners have been provided with a list of CAA welders known to the LAA. < Back Malcolm McBride Update 6 Feb 2026 Malcolm's funeral will take place on 20 th February at 11 am at the village church: St Mary's Church Manor Farm Lane Chesterton Bicester OX26 1UD The wake will be at: The Kitchen and Bar Whitelands Farm Sports Ground Whitelands Way Bicester OX26 1AJ The LAA are sad to announce the death of former LAA Airworthiness Engineer Malcolm McBride, who passed away suddenly on Saturday after suffering a heart attack. Malcolm, who worked for the LAA between 2007 and 2021 was, during that time, responsible for approving many thousands of Permit revalidations on behalf of LAA members and helping members with cheerful advice about all aspects of looking after their aircraft and negotiating the regulations. Malcolm's regular 'Safety Spot' engineering articles in the LAA magazines were always amusing as well as informative, and attracted a significant following amongst LAA members. He was also an LAA Inspector for over 35 years. Our condolences to Malcolm's wife, Janice, and other members of his family. Funeral details to follow. Next Previous

< Back MTD-03-2025 - Marquart Charger Aileron Slave Strut 25 Jul 2025 LAA MTD-03-2025 - Marquart Charger Aileron Slave Strut The starboard aileron slave strut on Marquart Charger G-BHBT failed at the AN490 threaded fitting welded into the bottom end. A large proportion of the cross-section was cracked due to fatigue prior to final failure. The root cause of the fatigue cracking was probably flutter. Due to the difficulty of reliably inspecting for fatigue cracking at the base of threads, it has been decided to withdraw this strut design from the UK fleet. < Back MTD-01-2025 ISSUE 2 published - Zenair Tailplane Brackets 28 Aug 2025 MTD-01-2025 - 'Inspection of horizontal stabiliser (tailplane) attachment brackets and associated hardware for cracks, looseness and other forms of distress' for Zenair CH601, CH650, CH701, CH750 and variants of these four models has been upissued to Issue 2. This is in order to correct an error in the 'Effective Date' of this MTD. This MTD can be found HERE and is also available below. A number of cases have been found whereby the structural integrity of the horizontal stabiliser mountings on the Zenair types identified above have been compromised by one or more of the following: cracking of the attachment brackets oversize holes loose rivets distorted and chafed brackets. These problems could occur due to a number of factors including poor build quality, a build-up of tolerances in the positioning or dimensions of the brackets, improper assembly, rough treatment or in-flight vibration. Failure of a tailplane attachment could result in degraded controllability in flight or loss of control. Special inspections of this area have been recommended by Zenair since January 2017, in their document ‘Mandatory Action. Jan. 2017 – Inspection of Horizontal Stabilizer tail attachment brackets’. < Back MTD-01-2026 Issue 1 Published - Shadow Aircraft Oratex Disbonding 15 Apr 2026 MTD-01-2026 - 'Oratex Disbonding' was issued today for Shadow aircraft. This MTD can be found HERE and is also attached below. This follows a reported incident in the UK in which Oratex covering on the upper surface of a Streak Shadow wing suffered a largescale disbond while in flight. No LAA Shadow aircraft with Oratex covering may fly after the effective date of this MTD unless you comply with this MTD. Please refer to the MTD-01-2026 document for full details of the mandatory requirements .
